Success Coaching Tip - Indecision is Decision When Traveling the Road to Success

By Leanne Hoagland-Smith

One of my own quotes is that Indecision is a decision. When people choose (emphasize the world choose) not to make a decision, they have taken action by not taking action. No this is not double talk.

Many people regardless if they are business owners or are employed by others or are not currently employed face numerous decisions each day. How they respond to these decisions truly will separate the successful from the not so successful.

In my practice as a business coach, executive coach, trainer and facilitator (as these are only roles to help my clients secure their desired results), I share this short story.

Every morning Africa, a gazelle wakes up. It knows it must run faster than the fastest lion or it will be killed. Every morning a lion wakes up. It knows it must outrun the slowest gazelle or it will starve to death. It does not matter whether you are a lion or a gazelle. When the sun comes up, you had better be running.

Action is the key. Theodore Roosevelt was quoted as saying: In any moment of decision, the best thing you can do is the right thing; the next thing is the wrong thing; and the worst thing you can do is nothing. He understood that indecision is a decision and by not taking action even if is the wrong action is far better than doing nothing.

Possibly the fear of failure keeps people from making a decision. Living with indecision buffers individuals from facing the potential fear of failure. John Charles Sak said:

Failures are divided into two classes: Those who thought and never did and those who did and never thought.

In my own pithy way, I believe that God hates a coward. Not taking action is truly cowardly. When traveling the road to success in our quest to master success, we must do what we have never done before to get to where we have never been before.

This success coaching tip is two fold:

  1. To help you to realize that when you change your beliefs about indecision
  2. To recognize that indecision is a decision

Then you can go forward to being action driven because you have a personal action plan that is results focused. And success is all about action, about securing results and growing forward from where you are now to where you want to be.
